A fine Italian restaurant with magnificent water views could go by no better name than Porto Bello. It translates to "beautiful port," an ideal description of their location on Stirling Harbor overlooking the Southhold Bay, and a grilled marinated portobello mushroom is their signature appetizer, served with roasted pepper, gorgonzola crumbles and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette.
Owner Diane Divello and self-taught Northern Italian chef Joseph Patalano serve traditional Italian pastas, steaks, chops and seafood in an upscale nautical setting. A wall of arches separates the entrance from a white dining room with bright blue accents. The bar area boasts a wooden bar and comfortable lounge chairs. A ship's wheel and fishing nets complete the seafaring scheme while candlelight and a stone fireplace add a cozy sense of warmth. Check out model sailboats and original seascape oil paintings, or look out the large picture windows for the real thing.
Accordingly, the menu features seafood standouts like fresh fried calamari, dusted with seasoned flour and served with a terrific light marinara sauce. Specialties include zuppa di pesce, a mix of shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari sautéed in plum tomato sauce and served over linguine. If you prefer turf to surf, try the stuffed veal chop and a gorgonzola salad of baby field greens, artichoke hearts, olives, roasted peppers and gorgonzola tossed with house vinaigrette.
The courteous, efficient staff at Porto Bello is like a family. In fact, Diana's son Billy waits and bartends. Diana is a gracious hostess. She loves her restaurant and works hard to please her patrons, welcoming regular customers and new guests alike.
