Nisen Sushi exploded onto Woodbury’s dining scene with a hip, sexy vibe. Starting on Thursday night, the sleek lounge is host to Long Island’s most fashionable see-and-be-seen clientele. All weekend, the resident DJ and percussionist turn up the heat on the electric atmosphere.
The bar serves fine wines and a martini menu including the plum-infused Osaka while the dining room’s glass-enclosed cellar contains over 60 varieties of premium sake like the purest Wakatake Daiginjo. The young, hot and knowledgeable staff at Tom Lam and Robert Beer’s North Shore darling is well-versed in both food and beverage offerings, pairing them expertly.
Through a metal bead curtain, the dining room’s high ceiling comes full circle via dramatic arches. Banquettes and mod orange chairs seat diners at minimalist wooden tables when there isn’t a spot at the long sushi bar. Wavy dishware comes laden with finely crafted cuisine from kitchen and sushi bar alike. Executive Chef Anthony Martarana and Executive Sushi Chef Osan Weng use the highest quality ingredients for the finest preparations. Colorful, beautifully presented sushi and sashimi, including specialty rolls like the salmon and avocado filled Mango Hawaii Roll, combine textures to tantalize the palate. Hot starters are led by crispy rock shrimp tempura while kitchen specials feature innovative twists with a Japanese bent like superb sauteed red snapper with wasabi hummus and
pickled fennel. Authentic desserts like ice cream filled mochi share menu space with homemade eclectic entries like white chocolate caramel cheesecake.
