Pull into Brooks & Porter, one of the only prime steak houses on Nassau’s south shore. Named for two locomotives once used on the Long Island Railroad, models of which perch atop a divider, this spot is the talk of the town! Owners Frank and Roger Basile and Managing Partner Anthony Cavalho have created a classic steak house atmosphere with rich woodwork, cozy circular booths and hardwood floors. Cylindrical alabaster light fixtures and fans enhance the dramatic two-story coffered ceiling.
Begin at the handsome granite-topped bar; large and long, it accommodates ample seating for enjoying one of 26 wines by the glass, a designer martini, or a casual meal from the bar menu. For the true Brooks & Porter experience, reserve a seat in the main space or the upstairs balcony that provides dramatic views of the lively dining floor below. The professional waitstaff brings enormous plates brimming with oversize portions to your table on carts.
We enjoyed spinach salad with balsamic vinaigrette topped with slices of roasted portobello mushroom stuffed with goat cheese. A raw bar at the back of the dining room displays fresh oysters, clams and lobsters. Blackboard specials include perfectly cooked pan-seared scallops with capers and artichoke hearts. Steaks are the main attraction - 28 day dry aged USDA prime beef. The signature porterhouse for two arrived tender and delicious grilled to perfection. Pair it with crispy hash browns or sauteed asparagus and a bottle from the impressive international wine list heavy on California reds.
