Blue Fin owner Alex Yeh learned to cook in his father’s restaurant before leaving the culinary world to study architecture. Midway through, he realized where his heart lay and returned to his roots, finishing his studies in business and becoming a sushi chef at Manhattan’s esteemed Nobu. He brings this double expertise to his own venture where three kitchen and three sushi chefs use the highest quality ingredients to prepare unique updates on traditional dishes from Alex’s own recipes.
Artful presentations on modern, angular dishes include flowers. Delicate sauces are particularly good, like the yuzu soy that elevated signature yellowtail jalapeno to extraordinary. Yuzu lemon sauce accents tuna sashimi tiradito and the unexpected addition of mashed potatoes plays a joke on traditional ribeye teriyaki. Try light, spicy rock shrimp tempura, a selection of supremely fresh sushi and sashimi or exquisite miso black cod. For the best of the house, request an Oma Kase, the chef’s choice special dinner. Alex loves to experiment and tests different ingredients, giving his regulars tastings of new creations to get their feedback. House made desserts take the form of french-style pastries like airy chocolate cake rather than Japanese sweets. Pair meals with sake, hot or cold. Bottles are half price every night.
Modernized Japanese decor matches the innovative menu. A half wall divides a dramatic underlit onyx sushi bar from the main dining area and comfortable cream colored banquettes along a wood paneled wall inlaid with blue glass diamonds make up the restaurant. Etched glass partitions mark off three comfortable tatami rooms for an authentic dining experience.
