Just a few years ago, Maxxels was a popular fine dining restaurant on Jericho Turnpike. Then it was gone. The building was sold and we thought that was the end.
Now, with a three-star rating from The NY Times, Maxxels is back! And it’s everything we remember and more. Carmelo Sapuppo is a seasoned restaurateur with experience in Manhattan and on Long Island. He hired Chef Phil Iannuccilli who apprenticed at Mirabelle and cooked in fine NYC restaurants. Together they created a menu with the most delectable dishes. Anything you order is a winner. We loved the little meatballs in a savory thick sweet and sour tomato sauce. A special of wild striped bass was moist and tender with a crispy top. You can even get a burger which is a half-pound of sirloin, juicy and delicious. House made desserts are elaborate presentations that are magnificent. The most unforgettable was the honey roasted pear crisp with pecan crumb topping. A glass enclosed wine room houses the restaurant’s global collection and a back lit bar is a lively place to meet friends.
The dining room, with tones of orange, which Carmelo’s wife Kathy designed, is contemporary with whimsical photo posters by photographer Massimiliano Cherchi of model/actress Xenia Siamas. Banquettes are along one side and shadow boxes display colorful bottles and plates.
The cuisine of the new Maxxels is classified by Mr. Sapuppo as New American - and by that he means it’s as diverse as the cultures that make up America. Maxxels is back and it’s here to stay. FIXED PRICE DINNERS; LUNCH & DINNER
