Horace & Sylvia's Public HouseCuisine: Contemporary American
Avg. Check: $17 - $36
Attire: Casual

Horace and Sylvia’s Publick House is a sweet and sentimental testament to owner and CIA-trained chef Patrick Funk’s grandparents, who graciously lend their names to the eatery. This is a neighborhood restaurant with a twist, a casual place where “local people can meet friends and family in a warm and comfortable environment,” but one where the food is superb.

The restaurant falls into a niche of unpretentious dining. Patrick makes a point of emphasizing the relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices. Horace and Sylvia’s is not high end, but serves high quality food made with seasonal local ingredients. The menu changes accordingly. For the summer, they offer a roasted beet and goat cheese salad with mixed greens, dried cherries, and walnuts. Patrick finds the freshest goat cheese on farms in upstate New York and the Massachusetts Berkshires. Entrees include pan-seared Long Island duck in port wine sauce with roasted sweet potatoes and haricot vert.

Though food is the focus here, the decor holds its own. Rich woodwork and a fireplace in the lounge and bar areas contribute to the warm atmosphere, as do comfortable booths and banquettes in the main dining room. Curtain treatments add a sense of hominess. A stunning marble bar with lead glass fixtures offers a large and reasonably priced selection of international wines. Eighteen micro-brewed beers are available on draft.

Come for the food, stay for the music at this cozy neighborhood eatery.
