Amongst the cavalcade of restaurants in Huntington, Cafe Buenos Aires is something new. Managing partner Hugo Garcia and Chef Gustavo Soria grew up only blocks apart in Argentina but never met until they moved here. Celebrate this fortuitous union, serving authentic Argentine cuisine, modified for American tastes.
While the Argentine diet is heavy on red meats, Cafe Buenos Aires balances things out with fresh fish dishes. One of their specials - pan-seared halibut was cooked to perfection and served in a light saffron sauce. The characteristic mixed grill arrived tableside on a portable mini grill. Enough for two or more, it features sweetbreads, sausage, chicken, steak and short ribs, all of which were tender and juicy. Accompaniments to entrees are wildly creative; roasted pork tenderloin comes with bacon and caramelized bananas. Gustavo prepares all desserts himself. Crispy churros come brimming with pastry cream and a flambeed apple pancake arrives with leaping blue flames and a side of vanilla ice cream. The hands-down favorite was a fluffy Dulce de Leche mousse.
The extensive menu of hot and cold tapas stars homemade empanadas stuffed with chicken, beef, and, the most delicious, creamed corn. Other standouts include shrimp in garlic sauce and authentic bacalao (salted cod) croquettes. Hugo is wildly passionate about the opportunity to introduce diners to his culture and its food, and his enthusiasm is contagious. He’s proud to be the first to offer tapas in Huntington. Hugo encourages guests to come in, sit at the magnificent turn-of-the century onyx and carved wood bar; enjoy some sangria, sip one of the Argentine wines made from Malbec grapes, offered by the bottle or glass; and sample from the tapas menu in a fun, relaxed environment.
