About 32 years ago, Arthur Glad opened Pumpernickels and, to this day, he loves what he does. In the fine German tradition, the well prepared food is served with care. Artie’s brother, Louis is the chef and cooks homemade dishes in the true authentic way. He takes no short cuts in preparing this ethnic cuisine. His signature dish, Sauerbraten, is fork-tender meat in a savory gravy, served with potato dumplings and zesty red cabbage. At Pumpernickels, which is one of Long Island’s few remaining German restaurants, you can also delight in Bavarian favorites such as bratwurst with spicy mustard, ochsenmaul salad (pickled tongue), and head cheese with a zesty vinaigrette sauce. There’s also a selection of Continental dishes that include seafood, chicken, duck, steak and rack of lamb. All dishes start with fresh quality ingredients and end with a culinary delight. The wine list is international and there are 15 German beers available as well as mixed drinks. End your ethnic experience with warm apple strudel topped with vanilla ice cream, or rich, creamy homemade rice pudding.
The restaurant, with a full bar at the entrance, is
divided into two dining rooms where the lively atmosphere of old world charm is decorated with Tiffany style light fixtures, comfortable booths and terra cotta colored walls mixed with sand and sea shells for an interesting texture. The servers, many of whom have been here since the place opened, wear dirndl dresses in keeping with the authentic German theme.
Artie, wife Paulette, and their daughter, Lindsey invite
you to their little piece of Germany and are proud that Pumpernickels has been a part of Long Island’s dining scene for so many years. DAILY SPECIALS; PRIVATE PARTY ROOMS;
