Fans of the “Desperate Housewives” series catch on that the restaurant is coincidentally named after the show’s comical Latin couple, Carlos and Gabby. Some of the decorations bear out the whimsical spirit of the eatery, from the barbershop striped awning to a cactus or jalapeño souvenir atop a cabinet or two. The vivid, copper-hued interior features booth seating, and the retro-blue bar stools at a counter, are the perfect setup for an express meal.
The Riverdale restaurant, which opened in March 2010, is the fourth outpost of the popular chain, and opened only when owner Avram Klein felt he mastered the perfect pairing of American-style Tex-Mex with authentic south of the Border cuisine. “With Gabby's, we succeeded in combing an extensive menu of Mexican favorites, fused with a handful of American classics, and all the great sauces,” he said “This is culinary excellence, combined with a reasonable price point.”
The tried and true appetizers are spun in piquant Mexican sauces such as Tangy BBQ, Avocado Ranch and Creamy Caesar. Other interesting elections include hot dogs in creamy jalapeno sauce, and juicy chicken wings, seasoned and cooked to a golden brown in a honey barbecue sauce. The creamed spinach dip with pita chips is pitched as supreme. They are the prime taco spot - a variety of five flavors with several shell picks (soft, crispy or soft grilled). The portions of some of the dishes are packed, and make excellent stand-alone meals. The nacho bowls brim to the rim, as do the oversized potatoes with either chili, vegetables, chives or thin strips of rib-eye steak. Flame-grilled burgers are full with crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, grilled onions, and pickles.
