With a hint of Jewish in its name, Moshi Moshi, which opened in the Summer of 2004, is actually a traditional Japanese greeting that appropriately reflects the restaurant’s warmth and hospitality. With a maritime theme, large coral displays including a 175-gallon saltwater aquarium and subdued, fluorescent blue lighting, this family-oriented restaurant has a calming and easy-going feeling.
While the cuisine is deeply rooted in Japanese culinary traditions, owner Yitzchak Geyer points out that they don’t shy away from fusing other Asian culinary schools, namely Chinese, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Indian. For instance, some items on their menu contain curry, a traditional Indian spice, while others incorporate lemon grass as customary in Malaysian cuisine. These novelties appear on their weekly specials, but be assured that the staple of their restaurant is Japanese cuisine. Master chef, Chang Ming Shi, born in Fu-Chin, China, brings along over 20 years of experience in top Manhattan restaurants and a vast knowledge of kosher cooking.
House specialties include, Crispy Duck, prepared according to Chef Shi’s long-standing family tradition as well as Moshi Moshi Rib Eye Steak which is served on an intricately carved, fried potato bed. As soon as the juice from the flavorful steak seeps into the french fried bed, your tastebuds will let you know you have made the right choice. Other favorites are the Beef Kinoko, a rare spectacular fusion of beef and mushrooms and the Moshi Moshi Shell Noodles which reinforces the maritime theme of the restaurant, bringing out the marine delicacies of the East. Their teriyaki sauce is just terrific and is highly recommended with their salmon, beef or chicken. From their wide sushi selection, Dancing Yellowtail Roll, Rainbow Dragon Roll and Green Ocean Roll are all best bets.
