Walking into Island Grill, you would think you just
entered a Turkish palace. This Brooklyn restaurant, which opened in the latter part of 2003, is decorated with beautiful castle-like architecture of bright skylights and multi-colored columns. After you taste the authentic cuisine, you’ll know
that the design of the restaurant is not just “window dressing.”
According to their customers, owner Nachman Selka, who took over the restaurant in 2005 and son, Moshe, have established themselves as the most heimeshe steakhouse in Brooklyn. They have also been working very hard to provide something unique to the ever-growing Flatbush community of restaurants. They wanted to not only provide Middle Eastern food but add a little twist. Featuring, for the first time, Turkish handmade breads and a unique Israeli system in offering 26 delectable house salads, Island Grill has everything you would want in a very spacious
dining room. Their back room is always busy with private parties and they are constantly approached by diners, who were so impressed with the quality of the food, to cater their next affair.
The cuisines of the Middle East and Japan both come together at the restaurant, as they are the only steakhouse in Brooklyn to serve Middle Eastern dishes and have a separate Sushi and Sashimi bar. Nachman is adamant that everything is extremely fresh with any leftovers going to charitable organizations. Their entrees are just as terrific. The Adana Kebab, a combination of lamb and beef over a bed of rice bursts with flavor and has a perfect mixture of spices. The Turkey Shawarma is masterfully cooked to perfection and is equally outstanding. The M-16 sushi is a “can’t miss” and is appropriately named. It is, indeed, dangerously delicious, with a crispy texture and a creamy taste.
With the variety of salads, tasty dishes and genuine Middle Eastern desserts offered at Island Grill, the restaurant is continuing to make a name for itself and there is no doubt that they will be extremely popular for years to come. |
