Mama’s Vegetarian Restaurant is one of those establishments in which the food speaks for itself. As the restaurant is clean and bright, decorated with posters of colorful vegetables, it does not pretend to be fancy or formal. Haviv, the owner of Mama’s Vegetarian is content with serving delicious sandwiches, platters and borekas.
You can’t find a more affordable place to grab a bite or take the kids to than Mama’s. Located in the heart of the downtown Philadelphia area, the cafe is just blocks from Rittenhouse Square Park. They are also a few minutes drive or a nice 20 minute stroll from all the city’s historic landmarks with plenty of shops on the way. Locals come in at least a few times a week to get their falafel “fix.” If you have a big appetite, the Mama platter gives you a mix of tomato, lettuce, hummus, and 7-8 falafel balls, plus a pita to make your own sandwich. It’s extremely filling. They get very busy around lunchtime, with lines sometimes out the door and seating is limited, so get there early.
No doubt, the restaurant has garnered rave reviews. The AOL City Guide of Philadelphia writes “If you're missing your Mama's cooking, consider a trip to her eponymous spot on 20th Street. Okay, maybe your Mama isn't a kosher vegetarian falafel maker, but you might want to swap her in for one after tasting some of the Middle Eastern treats at this spot.” And the Daily Pennsylvanian remarks, “Mama's Vegetarian is a lively Middle Eastern joint serving one of the freshest falafel sandwiches. Not only are their ingredients fresh but everything including the 250 pita breads baked daily” The Philadelphia Magazine even rated them the best falafel in the city.
If you are from New York or New Jersey and are looking to take a nice day trip with the family, Philadelphia is just a short drive south and is filled with cultural and social events. While you’re there why don’t you stop by the restaurant. With a name like Mama’s, how can you resist? |
