If one remembers Ranoosh, and most do fondly, then you’ll love Kan Zaman, a Lebanese Bistro and Bar. That’s mostly due to the majority owner of Ranoosh, Sam Bayari, who is back and better than ever. Sam is a no nonsense kind of guy. He knows what his customers want and like and he gives it to them. In fact, his philosophy is whatever “I wouldn't eat, I wouldn’t serve.” He treats people the way he wants to be treated. And with over a dozen years of cooking experience, he is working hard in the kitchen preparing all the wonderful and unique dishes one could not find anywhere else.
Opened in February of 2006, this dimly-lit, auburn color, palace-like restaurant, offers many special Lebanese and Middle Eastern dishes. Even the soups are authentic - take for instance the Shourbet Kufta Soup, which is a light tomato soup with kufta balls and petite pasta. Or the Adas Soup of red lentils with a touch of onion and cumin. For the salad selections, the most well known and, deservedly so, is the Fatoush salad, with the Ranoosh Salad right behind it. Kan Zaman also has many of the Middle Eastern salads and appetizers, like Hummus, Tahini, Cigars and Falafel, but make sure you try the Syrian favorite, Lahamajun, which is ground lamb mixed with pomegranate nectar, laid on top of pita bread.
Many house specialities come from the oven, such as the cashcooli, consisting of lamb, beef or chicken baked together with olives, potatoes, hearts of palm, artichoke hearts and cherry tomatoes. They have a superb Rack of Lamb and for something really special, get the mixed grill - a delicious combination of their kufta kebab, shish tawook and beef kebab. For those who are not in the mood for meat, they have many fish items and vegetarian delicacies like Bayma, baby okra pan seared and served in a light tomato sauce; Fasulia, tender white beans sauteed with garlic and coriander and lastly, Menazale, thick slices of eggplant layered with sauteed onions and sumac then baked with tomato sauce. Simply amazing!
For those looking to spend a weekend or just get away to the Jersey Shore, it is worth noting that restaurant is within walking distance of the beach and the Ocean Place Hotel. |
