Succah On Succot: Yes Nine Days Menu: Yes Open For Pesach: No
After many successful years in Brooklyn, it made sense for Essex on Coney to expand. With the property bought right before September 11, 2001, Essex on Coney Downtown was stalled for a few months. But in February 2002, the doors to the only kosher meat restaurant in Battery Park and the Wall Street area opened. Under the ownership of Julian Whiteman and son Meyer, those doors have been flying open ever since, with business meetings, casual lunches, SYMS shoppers and after work diners.
The high ceiling and spacious restaurant is convenient for tourists or out of town businessmen and women. They offer dinner delivery and Shabbos meals (including challah and wine) to all the nearby hotels like the Millennium Hotel and Ritz Carlton. Their reputation and food has customers coming from all over.
Sit down and you will see the familiar and delicious cole slaw and pickles waiting for you. Look over the menu and your mouth will water over the thought of a great American pastrami sandwich or an incredible juicy burger deluxe with fries. But first, you need to start off with their one-of-a-kind turkey gumbo soup with pieces of turkey, rice, carrot and celery. Not in the mood for soup? Try their creamy mashed potatoes or their right-out-of-the-oven, taste-like-cake specialty, soft noodle pudding.
Next, bite into one of the softest corned beef sandwich you’ll ever taste or a grilled to perfection sliced steak sandwich with onions. Surprisingly to some, but not for long, their salads have been said to be the best in town. And if you happen to be there on a Thursday or Friday, you must not leave without tasting their Chulent. It is unlike your Chulent at home and not even comparable to the kiddush you will have this Shabbat. With plenty of meat and potatoes and a unique smokey taste, it’s so good that you’ll need to order more for all of your Shabbat meals.
And if you happen to have room after your meal, why not end it with an apple strudel or better yet, why have a piece of cake when you can have another juicy hot dog! |
