Ernie & Ellie’s, also known simply to locals as Ernie’s, is beloved as a favourite family kosher restaurant. On a typical evening, you can be sure to find families celebrating birthdays and anniversaries as well as groups of friends enjoying one another’s company and the warm setting. Ernie’s makes its mark by being both an elegant and semi-formal sit-down restaurant as well as a child-friendly eatery with a child-friendly menu.

The restaurant has recently undergone a change of ownership, and the new owners of Russian origin have vamped up both the décor and the menu. The newly renovated restaurant is both elegant and cozy - it has a substantial seating capacity and yet manages to give the impression of privacy at each of its many tables. Ernie’s is also much-loved for its large plush banquettes and the distinction of getting to sit at one on a busy night is definitely considered a treat. Ernie’s is also extremely well-serviced and the wait staff is always courteous, attentive and ready to refill an empty water glass.

The menu at Ernie’s is as vast and diverse as its milieu and there is truly something for everyone! For vegetarians there are excellent fish and pasta dishes on the menu. However, Ernie’s is most widely celebrated for its Chinese and American deli offerings. To reflect the heritage of the new owners, some notable Soviet dishes have also been added to the menu. Try the Chebureki, a large meat and spice-filled fried pastry, the Russian and Central Asian version of the boureka.

Every outing at Ernie’s begins with one of their delicious soups. For those who would prefer to begin their meals with an appetizer, I strongly suggest the Pu Pu Platter, especially for those looking to impress or entertain a guest. As far as main courses go, there are plenty to choose from! There is a children’s menu which offers the usual kid-friendly fare. For those of us in the over 12 years of age category, there is an assortment of popular Chinese dishes, such as Pineapple Chicken, Cashew Chicken, Sesame Beef to name just a few. There are a number of salads, sandwiches, steaks and meat platters available as well. Whatever dish you choose, you can always be assured that your meal will be consistently fresh, succulent and keep you coming back to try more.
