Welcome To Mattan Cherry
Mattancherry is a town situated in the suburbs of Kochi city, of the Ernaculam district. A town that received first Jewish settlers, reaching south west cost of India after the destruction of the Temple in 70 C.E, they were known as Kochini Jews. The Kochini Jews knew all of the Jewish traditions and preserved all Jewish traditions. They were particularly strict of Passover and didn’t even allow the non-Jews to touch the cooking utensils during this period. As stated before the Kochini Jews were very influential in their society. Numerically the Kochini Jews at their height were 3000 and that was in the 1940s. Of that the Pardesi (or Mattancherry Jews) were only 200. Today there are about 70 Jews in Kochin.
About India’s culinary quilt …
With a population of around 1 billion people, a multitude of cultures and a handful of religions, India is rightfully known as a subcontinent. The country is divided into states, each with its own character, cooking and language. Regional cuisine is still based on local agriculture, climate and general topography. India’s culinary quilt was then further patterned by the many invaders and settlers who called India their home. They brought with them their own culinary traditions, which were then blended with local ingredients to create new dishes and tastes.
Most of the Mattancherry dishes stem from traditional northern Indian cooking. We have also added a smattering of regional fare.
Indian meals traditionally contain a spectrum of ingredients spanning the food groups. The building blocks of Indian cuisine are now accepted as being highly beneficial for health and are revered for their preventative and curative powers. The main super ingredients are tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger and spices. In fact, spices are considered to possess powerful antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Indian sages discovered and understood these benefits centuries ago and carefully wove them into the fabric of our cuisine. |
