Owner Uri Allon has always been ahead of the times- whether it was the first to combine Middle Eastern cuisine with traditional deli or more recently, adding sushi to a Middle Eastern/Delicatessen restaurant. Uri, who happened to be a well known singer/performer in Israel in the 1980’s, literally built the Riverdelight with his own hands. It was back in February 1994, when he decided Riverdale was the place he was going to to share his recipes and wonderful cooking. As a young boy, he was influenced by his mother’s cooking and with his own recipes, he has built an establishment she would be proud of.
Uri understood the landscape of Riverdale and its surrounding areas. He knew that he had to cater to the young, old and everyone in between. The restaurant has many traditional European dishes, such as gefilte fish, stuffed cabbage and chopped liver yet offers many gourmet and contemporary items, such as Grilled Chicken in a Picatta Sauce, a 24oz. aged Delmonico steak and stuffed breast veal. Of course, they have many grilled and Middle Eastern specialties, like shwarma, falafel and shish kabab as well as plenty of deli overstuffed and open sandwiches. Just to make sure that everyone who comes in has something they crave, Uri added a sushi bar a few years back and now has the entire community thanking him. Even former Mayor Rudy Guiliani, praised his sushi as “the best he ever had.”
Because of the large variety of dishes, many customers come more than once a week. One of the reasons is surely their famous all-you-can-eat salad bar that comes with every entree ordered. This is not some ordinary salad bar- there are over 14 gourmet salads to choose from, ranging from pasta salads to traditional salads. It was Uri’s idea to offer the salad bar because he wanted to go the extra mile, always making sure your meal will be up to your expectations, whether it is the white table cloths, efficient service or a well dressed staff. Uri is aware of what goes into everything and he is quick to point out that he never had any trans fat in his cooking from Day 1. Riverdelight specializes in take out and catering and is amazingly busy on Friday morning with their deli//salad/bakery counter. They are the last restaurant out of or into the city, so if there is a time where you find yourself in Upper Manhattan or in the Bronx, be sure to stop by - you won’t be disappointed. |
