Two and a half years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area, Kosher Cajun has continued its position as the one-stop kosher food establishment in the South. It all started back in 1987, when owners Joel and Natalie Brown began bringing kosher edibles to the area, which up until then had been unknown. The restaurant which is just three blocks from the Lakeside Mall, also acts as a deli and grocery offering
local residents and travelers a wide selection of quality food, large portions at family-friendly prices.
With a very good “21” in food and “20” in service, The Zagat Survey puts it best: There's no place in town more "like a New York deli" than this "awesome" Metairie nosh shop serving "Jewish favorites", from corned beef on rye with Dr. Brown's cream soda, to matzo ball soup "you'll love" to "kosher gumbo (don't know how they do it!)" Groceries "by the pound" and domestic and imported kosher wines enhance the offerings of this "family-operated" eatery.” Yes, the upscale market has a variety of over 1000 kosher items with everything you need for a mid-week stay or Shabbat meal including New York baked challahs, rolls and salads. The restaurant also offers huge party platters for all of your catering needs.
At Kosher Cajun, the word "Deli" means much more than "corned beef on rye." It means you're getting only the finest straight from New York but with a deep south cajun flare. For example, select portions of finely marbled and cured corned beef, pastrami and tongue; the best cuts of beef and turkey, oven roasted or smoked slowly to juicy perfection, delicious salami, bologna and, of course, chopped liver. Additionally, homemade cole slaw, fresh potato and macaroni salads, make the perfect accompaniments to their mouth-watering main deli meals. Kosher Cajun equals quality.
Then, there are the added touches you've come to expect in a true New York delicatessen. Exquisite, perfectly smoked salmon and whitefish and golden crusted knishes with choice of fillings. As their surname implies, you can enjoy truly unique Cajun delicacies such as jambalaya, gumbo and delicious rotisserie chicken, all fresh and made to order. House specialties include the fried imitation shrimp poboy, served on a subroll with cocktail sauce, lettuce and tomato as well as the Kosher Cajun Chicken Sausage Okra Gumbo served with garlic bread. |
