Succah On Succot: Yes Nine Days Menu: Yes Open For Pesach: No
With great anticipation and fanfare from the area residents, Max and David’s opened up this past October. Owner and “Chief Optimist,” Steven Katz, named the restaurant in honor of his grandfather, Max and father, David. So, what’s the reason for so much buzz? It’s because of who developed all the recipe and menu items. It is none other than Aliza Green, the Philadelphia-based cookbook author, journalist and pioneering chef. She is the author of eight highly successful cookbooks and has appeared twice on NBC’s Today Show.
This is Aliza’s first foray into Kosher cuisine and with local product Chef Jared Cohen at the cooking helm, there is much to be excited about. Even the Zagat Survey has jumped on board declaring: “Everything, including an ambitious selection of Mediterranean and Eastern European dishes out of the open kitchen at this contemporary BYO in Elkins Park is kosher.” Steven points out that the restaurant is not just a kosher restaurant, but a great restaurant that happens to be kosher. The menu changes according to the season and features around the world cuisine, prepared from scratch with no preservatives and with only locally grown produce.
According to Katz there was a need for this kind of homemade cuisine. In fact, they are the only glatt kosher fine dining steakhouse within a 50 mile radius. The restaurant has an open kitchen design with a modern, contemporary look, decorated with artwork from famous local Jewish artists. The restaurant also has a separate area for take-out, with meat, fish and vegetarian selections. Catering for all holidays, especially Shabbos dinners are emphasized.
House specialties include homemade smoked Rumanian pastrami, homemade apple-ginger glazed smoked turkey and a warm, dark chocolate-hazelnut torta. It is important to note that Elkins Park is just 20 minutes from Philadelphia proper. With lines sometimes out the door, make sure you call ahead to a make a reservation. |
