Adjacent to the railroad tracks, in what used to be the lawn and garden section of Goodman’s Hardware Store, sits The Pasta Factory. This magnificent open space with high ceilings and attractive modern-industrial decor serves eclectic contemporary cuisine that makes it feel more like SoHo than Bergen County. And, it happens to be kosher. Other than the fact that The Pasta Factory specializes in dairy, vegetarian, fish and pasta dishes, most patrons wouldn’t even guess the kitchen is under Rabbinical supervision. But, you don’t need to be Jewish or keep kosher to appreciate this fine food.

The executive chef, David Dewhirst, is a classically-trained veteran of Manhattan restaurants and he does wonders within the limits of kashrut. Start with freshly made a la minute mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, roasted peppers, arugula and a balsamic reduction or a warm wild mushroom and goat cheese tart. Be sure to check out the fresh pasta dishes: Spinach Fettuccini with wild mushrooms, feta cheese, extra virgin olive oil, garlic and fresh cracked pepper and the Pappardelle Con Brodo Di Tartufo with broccoli rabe, butternut squash, portabella mushrooms, spinach, celery root in a vegetable truffle oil broth. You can’t go wrong with any of the fish dishes. Pan roasted Chilean sea bass with herb roasted gnocchi, baby spinach, tomato lemon caper sauce or wasabi-sesame crusted Big Eye Tuna with soba noodle stir fry/ Asian long beans and ginger soy broth. All desserts are created by their in-house pastry chef, including the ice creams. Try the butterscotch Budino or the Bourbon Pecan Pie. The Dark Chocolate Truffle Torte will lift your spirits.

The Pasta Factory is B.Y.O.B., but with one caveat- the wine must be kosher and mevushal. A nearby liquor store has a nice selection and will deliver to the restaurant; just ask the staff for help. Another plus for the restaurant is the availability of a beautifully designed and spacious private dining space – perfect for group events.
