“Is soup really a meal?” Of course, we all know that from a famous episode of Seinfeld in which Banya asks Jerry to go to Mendy’s with him. But is soup really a meal? One look at the new and improved menu at Mendy’s and you’ll surely answer, “no way, not as long as they’re offering Bison Burgers, 24 oz. steaks, shawarma and sushi.”

As the Seinfeld story goes, the creator of the show, Larry David, did actually dine at the restaurant on a daily basis and order the pea soup and a sandwich. But it wasn’t until owner, Mendy Merel, saw it on TV, that he realized Larry David wrote him in. It’s been sometime since then and Mendy and son, Eitan, have revamped the old Mendy’s. It definitely has the same great “old New York” flavor and taste - why change, when something’s been working - but they recently added a little style to their famed delicatessen.

The restaurant is somewhat casual when you first walk in, with the deli counter on the left and room to sit on the right. But walk in a little further and you enter a classy, and might it be said, an elegant decor. Together with their faux fire place, wood paneling and mahogany tables, a warm, cozy feeling overcomes you. You can enjoy, of course, a large bowl of homemade Matzah Bowl Soup and knishes, as well as any of their delectable deli sandwiches, especially their soft corned beef. They also offer several Middle Eastern dishes, such as Eitan’s favorite “Shawafel” - Shawarma in a falafel. The aforementioned Bison Burger is a terrific choice. The lean meat could be attractive to the diet conscious diner. And for vegetarians, they have a “Healthy Corner” with a variety of sushi rolls.

You can find Mendy’s throughout Manhattan (and now in Brooklyn) and they all offer catering packages to showrooms, offices and homes. With the likes of Mayor Guliani, confirming that they have the “best pastrami in town,” and Jerry and Banya dining at Mendy’s, isn’t it time you also paid a visit?
