NYC Chinatown Kosher Restaurants? Submitted by: tourist on Feb 7th 2005 As an out of towner, I am having trouble identifying a kosher restaurant in the area of Chinatown. Can anyone help out? Thanks!
Reply #1 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Feb 7th 2005 The problem is that there aren't any kosher chinese restaurants in Chinatown. The closest kosher restaurant to have Chinese in Manhattan is Mr. Broadway on Broadway & 38th. If you can't go that far, try Essex on Coney Downtown (it's a delicatessen but it's not too far from Chinatown)- and they have very good food. Good luck.
Reply #2 submitted by: tourist on Feb 8th 2005 Thanks. Is there anything Kosher that is not Chinese food in Chinatown?
Reply #3 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Feb 9th 2005 Unfortunately there isn't anything really kosher in the heart of Chinatown. However, Noah's Ark at 399 Grand Street (probably a few blocks outside Chinatown) near Delancey and Essex is the closest. Essex on Coney Downtown (on Trinity Place- bet. Morris St. & Exchange Pl.) and the Village Crown (on 3rd Ave. & 12th St.) are the next closest. Noah's Ark is not on our website, but Essex on Coney Downtown and Village Crown are.
Reply #4 submitted by: Steve Berkowitz on May 24th 2005 Buddah Bodai on Mott Street (near Worth St.) is a vegitarian restaurant that claims to be kosher. You'll have to check with your Rabbi about the certification.
Le Marais Submitted by: Moishe Schwartz on Feb 1st 2005 I bought $650 worth of gift certificares for a friend's party at Le Marais and I specifically stipulated that I wanted to take care of their entire bill including the tip. When it came time to pay, the bill came out to about $500 plus about $100 tip. They then refused to accept the gift certificates that I had purchased for that specific purpose for the tip. Long story short if anyone wants $200 in gift certificates to Le Marais I'd sell them for $150 This also goes for any other kosher restaurant just email me at joedra2002@yahoo.com
Reply #1 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Feb 1st 2005 Moishe,
Normally the restaurants prefer you pay in cash when it comes to the tip, because that goes towards the waiters.
Reply #2 submitted by: leah on Aug 10th 2008 i know you posted this 3 years ago but do you by any chance have any more le Marais certificates?
Shop Rite of Ave, I Submitted by: Josh on Feb 1st 2005 Best sushi made fresh daily, it's cool to watch the guy making it, and they have all types of fish, too! There's also a kosher meat dept. where you can get fresh cut meat and chicken; tons of Kosher stuff from Jewish and non-Jewish brands.
Word of warning: read labels! make sure what you're holding is kosher! Rabvbi Dovid Beck does the hashgacha (watching).

Reply #1 submitted by: Moish on Mar 12th 2005 I agree. I work in the area and order lunch from there almost daily. Their baguettes are baked on premises and are heavenly (they have them in whole-wheat as well). Try the sandwiches on Baguette. Scrumptious!!

Reply #1 submitted by: Steak Expert on Jan 25th 2005 Skewer's Steak House on Union TPKE. is by far the best steak house in New York. I have tried every steak place in New York, and have never had a finer dining experience. My wife and I have been there every sunday for the past month, and they never sieze to amaze. This place takes the crown off of Hapisgahs' head. What a great Queens treasure, even if you wait slighly longer for your food. They make everything (including desserts) in house. What steak house does that anymore? I love that place. Try it, you will never eat elsewhere! P.S. the Sea Bass is phenomenal.
Skewers Steakhouse Submitted by: Simcha on Jan 25th 2005 Great rib steak
Gusto Va Mare Submitted by: zajac on Jan 24th 2005 WE did not have a nice experience at your restaurant. very expensive no food and did not taste good. Your waiters could not even explain to us the menu. It was very dark and dingy!!
Reply #1 submitted by: Miriam on Feb 9th 2005 I agree - had a large crowd with us for dinner in December -- very disappointing -- the appetizers were better than the entrees
Tea for Two Cuisine Brooklyn Submitted by: Mutty on Jan 18th 2005 Incredible. Remains one of my favorite milchig restaurants.
Talia's Steakhouse Submitted by: Anoynomous on Jan 18th 2005 they are not open for lunch
Park East Grill Submitted by: Mrs. Loretta Williams on Jan 18th 2005 The worst kosher steakhouse I've ever been to. My husband and I shared a ONE POUND steak calling it a steak for 2 for $60.00. The bill for a family of 4 was $200.00 & when we got home we were still HUNGREY. As a mother who keeps kosher NEVER AGAIN.
Reply #1 submitted by: Anonymous on Jan 19th 2005 CAN I SUGGEST ANOTHER NEW RESTAURANT...ALTHOUGH NOT A STEAKHOUSE, MIKE'S BISTRO IS A GREAT OVERALL FINE DINING EXPERIENCE. EXCELLENT FOOD, SERVICE AND A NICE PLACE TOO. TRY IT OUT. IT'S ON 72ND STREET BETWEEN BROADWAY AND WESTEND.
Reply #2 submitted by: Sarah Lewis on Jan 22nd 2005 I always eat at Park East Grill and we love it. I have eaten the steak for 2 many times and it is HUGE. One time we split it between 3 people and still had left overs. It remains a favorite place of mine !!
Reply #3 submitted by: SAMMY on Jan 30th 2005 I WAS THERE WITH A PARTY OF FOUR NOT THAT CHEEP BUT GOOD FOOD EVERYONE WALKED OUT HAPPY AND FULL (I WAS ON THE ATKINS DIET ALL I EAT WAS MEAT AND STILL WALKED OUT FULL) MAYBE IT WAS JUST A BAD NIGHT GIVE IT ONE MORE CHANCE THE OWNER MICHEL IS A VERY NICE AND SWEET GUY
Hapisgah Steak House Submitted by: Estelle on Jan 9th 2005 The most delicious steak, shish kebab everything in the world. I had chicken, my husband had the sizzling steak with the onions. We licked our fingers and the plates clean. Huge portion, we had to finish it was too delicious. I wish I lived closer, I would eat there every day. Service great, atmosphere great as well.
Reply #1 submitted by: Vladimir on Nov 27th 2006 Extra charge for a second plate of pickles? Unacceptable.
Reply #2 submitted by: Yaakov & Leba on Aug 9th 2007 Out of all the restraunts in New York Hapisgah is by far our favorite. The decor is beautiful and romantic with wonderful small tables for two. The food is absolutely amazing....no matter what you pick. The house steak on top of mushrooms and onions on a special hot plate is enough foof for two. They have a complete bar to start off your meal with coctails. My wife loves the SOB drink. We could never give a higher recommendation to any eatery as we do for Hapisgah. And the price..you cannot believe how reasonable. Do yourself and loved one a favor and take our advise.
Moshi Moshi Submitted by: Anoynomous on Jan 9th 2005 Moshi Moshi is a chance to sample some of the best and most authentic sushi in town. Steaks are great too. Worth the drive to Brooklyn.
Reply #1 submitted by: sandra on Jun 4th 2008 My family and I came to celebrate my son's 16th Birthday. The experience was superb from beginning to end. Much better than we expected. The staff was friendly, and eager to please. All of our en tree's (family of 5) were delicious. To top it off A complimentary birthday dessert was brought to my son and the music played was a b-day song in english and mandarin.

Reply #1 submitted by: estelle on Jan 9th 2005 Try Va Bene in Manhattan. Class a all the way.
Reply #2 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Jan 9th 2005 Which area? Gusto Va Mare and Il Patrizio in Manhattan both have terrific food and very nice ambiance.
In Boro Park, Brooklyn, recommendations are Orchidea and Avenue Plaza Dining and in Flatbush you have Bertolinis, Sea Dolphin and Tea for Two- all excellent choices.
Reply #3 submitted by: Adam on Jan 9th 2005 Had a great meal at Sea Dolphin tonight. Delicious warm garlic pita bread to start with, Penne alla Vodka was amazingly creamy, the Tiramisu cake was soft and tasty and without a doubt, the best cappuccino in the world.
Reply #4 submitted by: Anoynomous on Mar 23rd 2007 Had a great meal at Sea Dolphin tonight. Delicious warm garlic pita bread to start with, Penne alla Vodka was amazingly creamy, the Tiramisu cake was soft and tasty and without a doubt, the best Cappuccino in the world.
Coifiocchi Ristorante Submitted by: Brian Pinsker on Jan 6th 2005 I was wondering what people have heard about this restaurant. Good things? Bad things? Are there any better kosher restaurants in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale?
Reply #1 submitted by: Karen on Jan 23rd 2005 Hi, I ate there last year. It is on the expensive side but the food is great. We were are a party of five and everyone loved the food. The steaks were really good. Salads and pasta are also good.
We found the service to be very friendly.

Kosher foods Submitted by: Bill Jordan on Dec 29th 2004 Is there any stores or Delis in Winter Haven, Florida where i could buy Jewish Corn Beef or Jewish Salami?
Reply #1 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Jan 3rd 2005 Unfortunately, there aren't any delicatessens near there. However, there are restaurants that will ship food anywhere in the United States, namely, Essex on Coney and King David in New York (their info can be found on this site). The best best is to find a restaurant that you like and ask them if they ship nationwide. Nowadays, some restaurants have become experts at sending fresh food in air-tight frozen, ready to heat packages. You can even contact KosherOnWheels.com for more choices.

Reply #2 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Jan 3rd 2005 Wolf & Lamb Steakhouse and Colbeh (Persian food if you like that) both have a very nice ambiance and their prices are pretty reasonable for Manhattan standards. Village Crown (Moroccan) and Talia's Steakhouse are also pretty good choices. Let them know the Great Kosher Restaurants Magazine sent you, they'll take good care of you. Happy Anniversary!

Mosaica Submitted by: MPoppers on Dec 7th 2004 Todd (who took down our 10th-anniv-dinner reservations) wasn't there the night that we dined (our first visit there -- we certainly hope to return), but he ensured that the server treated us right (a complimentary appetizer for us both and a complimentary slice of that heavenly choc. cake, adorned with a candle, for my wife). The server himself wasn't top-notch (he didn't mention the "special" entree that wasn't on that week's menu, and he was too enthralled with the kitchen goings-on and his conversation with the other server to notice that we were done with the entrees and looking forward to his continued service -- as part of visiting the WC, I clued him in on walking to our table), but the food was excellent!
Todd strives for a combination of tastes, and the dishes we tried were mostly successful in that regard. The foie gras appetizer was nothing to write home about, but the comp. appetizer of [duck?] liver and berries was delicious, as were our entrees, the duck with its polenta & potatoes and the lamb with its rice and beans. The choc. cake with pareve cream was, as I mentioned, out of this world! At this time, expect to pay on the order of $50/person (before any coupons you may wish to redeem ;-)), but you should receive a wonderful meal in return.
The menu we perused already is quite different from what's currently posted on this site, so even frequent visitors should never feel compelled to order the same item they previously savored. The restaurant itself is literally a hole in the wall, on the order of 10'x50', which hopefully will keep rental costs down and help Todd "make it" financially. The decor is understated, but as I didn't see any sound-absorbing elements (besides the entrance's hanging rugs), the place may be rather noisy if it's filled to capacity (which it definitely was not when we were there). Any questions, please reply to this message. Thanks!
Gusto Va Mare Submitted by: D Fineberg on Dec 6th 2004 The food is excellent. Three serious carnivores and one vegan all loved everything (the grilled tuna tasted like meat... that's our greatest compliment). The waiter gave us very good advice, but the staff was a bit slow. We'll come back again.
Mosaica Submitted by: Josh Weissman on Dec 5th 2004 Thanksgiving dinner was wonderful but our server was rude to us... even condensending... He ruined the mood of the afternoon.... But the food was good.
My Most Favorite Dessert Co. Submitted by: Leon M. on Nov 29th 2004 Great place for dates..good price, great service..full..they have a sukkah during sukkot...

Gusto Va Mare Submitted by: Carol Sheridan on Nov 29th 2004 Can I purchase a gift certificate for this restaurant?
Reply #1 submitted by: Publisher on Nov 29th 2004 Unfortunately, we don't have anymore certificates for that restaurant. The list that you see (which can be downloaded) on this site has all the current available certificates you can purchase at a discount. Feel free to call me at 718-253-9210 to discuss further. Thank you.
